Why does the road between TH roundabout and the new roundabout west of TH roundabout, needs to be upgraded to dual-carriageway?
In Option B, please explain why the road between TH roundabout and the new roundabout west of TH roundabout, needs to be upgraded to dual-carriageway?
Option B includes a short section of dual carriageway on the A46 between Teddington Hands roundabout and the new roundabout proposed as part of this option. In the public engagement materials, we have only published a high-level summary of the transport modelling undertaken for the scheme – focussed on the modelled scheme opening year and daily traffic flows to avoid presenting lots of technical detail. The assessments of where dual carriageway is needed versus single carriageway are based on models of traffic flows and network performance during the AM and PM peak periods with a 2041 forecast year which includes future traffic growth and has considered a range of local development scenarios (with varying levels of Garden Community development).
This work concluded that only providing a single carriageway between the two roundabouts would result in this part of the A46 becoming congested during peak periods. The flows are forecast to be higher on this section due to traffic joining the new A46 route from Ashchurch. At Teddington Hands, some traffic leaves the A46 for the B4077, so the flows north of Teddington Hands are lower than the section to the west of Teddington Hands.
